Penton Exec. Comes Out Blogging

February 8, 2007 by Marcus

When people tell me they want to blog, I give them one rule: do it for a month without telling anyone. Then, when they figure out you have a blog, they’ll have some content to read.

I never shared this rule with Penton’s Joe Pulizzi, but he must’ve heard it somewhere, because just today I found his blog and there’s some good stuff there. In particular, Joe has a relatively spot-on post on digital editions. He says, in part:

Tracking is outstanding. When used for audience development and international distribution, it’s near perfect. It’s also great as a teaser to get people to subscribe to receive the print publication.

That being said, Joe also feels the solution may be “temporary,” echoing what others have pondered.

At NXTbook, though, we consider our product to be radically evolutionary, rather than temporary. NXTbooks of today - with permalinks, search engine indexing, and advertiser reporting - look nothing like the NXTbooks of two years ago. In time, they’ll be something else entirely. But that’s not extinction; it’s progress.

Hey Marcus…thanks for the kudos. You are right, digital mags have come a long way…looking forward to the next versions that create a user experience nothing like we know today. Only time, and the customer, will tell.
