Leverage What You Know…

Over at Folio’s blog, it seems that another plan to provide better print readership metrics has failed. The post doesn’t shed much light on the reasons behind the failure, though Khanh speculates that “as more publishers and brands increasingly focus online (or at least pay lip service to focusing online), it becomes easier to just let magazines slide by.”
Here’s where digital editions can help. In previous market research studies, we’ve determined that - guess what - readers interact with digital editions similar to how they interact with print. While that probably isn’t the exact truth, the fact that digital readership is tracked at multiple levels means it’s a pretty good place to start if you’re truly looking to understand what your readers are (and aren’t) doing inside the digital edition.

A publisher with a “custom publishing” revenue stream can make their offer that much better by including a digital edition with their traditional print package.
Can You Digg It?

Last week, a few of us had the great opportunity to visit with some of our best customers in England. Graduate Prospects is a great brand, that caters to those getting ready to enter the labor market after school.
A few years ago, Prospects took a huge risk - abandoning their successful print magazine for 100% digital distribution. The move was a huge success for the brand.
Recently, they’ve taken the next step by having members of their team submit content to social media sites like Digg. This is a great way to get additional reads for your content.

After you take the quiz, you can also see where you fit among the general population. Very interesting!

While glory isn’t likely the best reason to do a digital edition, good press never hurts. Let’s hear it for Pinella’s Realtor Organization, which just received a Best of the Web Award from Realtor Association Executive! The judges called it “unique, attractive and informative!”

What the Media Says About Digital Editions

Here’s a link to FOLIO’s latest article on digital editions. Matt Kinsman did a nice job on this one and we think he really did a good job covering the current state of the industry.
We’re really proud of how the media has “kept up” with the vendors in the past year. PubExec also ran a really great article a few months ago, too.
If we had to be picky - and loyal readers know we are - I’d wonder about the “home grown” solution mentioned in the Kinsman article. The product has about 20% of the features of other digital editions and - according to figures mentioned in the article - is costing the publisher far more in development than he’d ever pay to work with us or our competitors, which doesn’t seem like it makes a ton of business sense.
But still, if you’re thinking of doing a digital edition - start by reading these two feature articles. You’ll find a wealth of information there.
