LICENSING TALES OF GREENERY Iconix Entertainment has received growing
interest recently in various projects lining its portfolio and it seems
that 2007 will also see further developments in two of its main
animations. Tales of Greenery is an epic tale which takes the audience on
a journey to Greenery - a distinct village where five young friends live.
An inventor, painter, cook, pilot bat and a little girl with dreams of
becoming a princess, together explore their natural habitat and encounter
a number of curious events. Tales of Greenery is a very gentle and
intriguing stop motion animation which allows the audience to be taken
into this magical world through the detail of the story. One of the main
advantages of this animation is the ease with which it relates to
children. It is not didactic in its approach but, through the animation it
conveys originality, sociality and propriety in a way of interest to
children. The Tales of Greenery series which comprises 26 episodes of 15
minutes each, aired on KBS from 24 November in Korea and has won several
awards, three of which were for Distinguished Pilot Award - Korea Culture
& Content Agency, GyeongGi Digital Content Agency and SICAF 2003 . The
series won a further award as a Star Project from the Korea Culture and
Content Agency KOCCA in 2005. Further discussions are ongoing within
European territories for the first series and series two is due to be
completed through KBS early this year. On a different note, 2006 has been
a good year for a certain little Penguin whose popularity is still
spreading from East to West generating great interest, so much so, that
this animation is airing practically simultaneously in over five
territories. The animation has been either nominated or has won copious
awards during 2005 and 2006. Most recently it won Best Character of the
Year 2006 and Best Media/ Cultural program of the year 2006 from the Korea
Culture and Content Agency KOCCA and Korean National Assembly,
respectively. Additionally, it was nominated and won 1st place runner up
at the Asian TV Awards within the Best Animation Category. Further
nominations were for Best Animation/Character at Cartoons on the Bay, Best
Commissioned Animation at SICAF, and finally Best Animated Television at
Annecy 2006. Mikyeong Jung, Director of Programme Development for Iconix
Entertainment expresses her belief that Pororo possesses longevity often
found in some of the more established properties. She explained, “We
have always believed in the magic of Pororo and when you see children’s
faces light up as they watch him on screen, it’s easy to understand how
quickly they become engaged with his character and that of his friends.
The sing-a-long has had a similar response which is great to see.” In
the first series, we are introduced to Pororo and three of his friends;
Poby, a good natured Polar bear, Eddy, a nosy and sometimes smug red fox
and Loopy a shy and timid little beaver. Each of the friends’ strengths
combine to create a well structured team. In the second series we are
introduced to two further friends who add to the team dynamics and help
contribute to a further fifty-two episodes. Looking ahead, there are
further developments planned in both animation and merchandising. The
little Penguin in question is none other than Pororo, who delivers
uncompromisingly cute storylines throughout each of the 104 episodes which
have been produced by Iconix Entertainment, in conjunction with Ocon and
EBS. Each five-minute episode is packed with fun and adventure for
preschoolers. From Korea, China CCTV, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, India,
Turkey, Denmark, Nordic Cartoon Network, Italy Rai , France TF1 and new
recruit, Tiji, UK Cartoon Network and Mexico Televisa , Pororo and Friends
have certainly made an impact. 52 Warning : Unknown : The session id contains invalid characters, valid
