Girls
IN ICT DAY
T
his April, OSPE had the pleasure of joining
Global Affairs Canada in celebration of
International Girls in ICT Day. This global event is
an initiative of the International Telecommunications
Union, aimed at creating a global environment
that empowers girls and young women to consider
careers in the growing field of information and
communication technology (ICT) and enables both
girls and technology companies to reap the benefits
of a greater female participation in the ICT sector.
Because of stereotypes and discrimination, many girls
don't pursue interests in ICT. But, this can be changed
by teaching girls to love technology from a young age
and encourage them to pursue ICT schooling, careers
and interests.
"This event was a first for Global Affairs Canada
and we are very proud to celebrate this important
day," said Isabelle Roy, ing., Senior Information
and Communication Technology Specialist, Global
Affairs Canada. "This event highlighted both
Canada's domestic and international efforts in
support of the sustainable development goals, and
more specifically empowering women and girls in
the digital space. Building on this success, we look
forward to next year's event."
Approximately 75 people joined in the event at
Global Affairs Canada's headquarters on Sussex Drive
in Ottawa which included an interactive session with
girls pursuing ICT from Kenya and Tanzania. In
addition to OSPE, numerous other organizations
participated in the festivities, including: Innovation
Science and Economic Development, International
Development Research Center, Status of Women
Canada, Actua, Information and Communications
Technology Council, Canadian Women in
Communications and Technology, Canadian
Commission for UNESCO, UNAC, Agha Khan
Foundation Canada, Engineers Without Borders,
Farm Radio International, Digital Opportunity
Trust, WUSC, CECI, OXFAM Canada and AIMS.

proportion of women taking degrees in STEM. This
is dubbed the "gender equality paradox."
