to read books, watch movies and surf
the Web, tablets are finding utility inside service environments. They’re quickly replacing POS terminals inside restaurants, and
many pioneering retailers, notably Sport Chek
in Canada, are finding ways of incorporating
Web-connected tablets into floor sales.
This Retailer’s Guide examines the behind-thescenes thinking required before independents
invest in tablet-enabled mobile POS devices.

“It’s easy to lose the customer’s attention,”
says Cherry Grewal, owner of ExCluCity, “and
it’s convenient to show alternative products
without running around the store.”
The tablets have been so successful that Grewal says she wants to put a tablet in the hands of
every sales associate. Tablets have helped differentiate the store from competitors, and best
of all, they can capitalize on customer impulses.
“Impulse buying is great now,” says Grewal.

Visit Montreal’s ExCluCity, an urban shoe
store, and you’ll encounter floor staff using
tablet computers to streamline the customer
experience. In the past, if a customer wanted to
try a shoe in size seven, the associate had to run
downstairs to check the inventory. Now associates can check inventory on the tablet, meaning
they never have to interrupt the conversation.
