retail landscape is certainly not
new, the rapidly developing world
of organized cyber-crime is creating a whole new environment for
operators. Our deep exploration of
these issues, highlighted with our
coverage of our September LP Conference, begins on page 20. Be sure
and keep an eye out for a profile of our inaugural recipient of the Loss
Prevention Lifetime Achievement Award, Rita Estwick. We couldn't be
prouder of Rita!
This issue of Canadian Retailer also heralds the beginning of a
partnership with Ryerson University's Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity. Their article, "CSCA Retail 100" (p. 38), provides a
detailed glimpse of the retail landscape in Canada, and a valuable
contribution to understanding our vibrant industry.
I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate the many men
and women who ran for political office and won the support of Canadians in the recent election. While the outcome is well known, at
Retail Council of Canada we wanted to take a moment to thank all
candidates for their hard work and dedication to the political process.
The 2015 Federal election was an important milestone for RCC, as
we launched the very successful voteretail.ca website to advocate
for, and provide education around, the retail industry to all political
parties. Merchants from across the nation sent over a thousand letters to their local political candidates, and we provided a valuable
tool for retailers and merchants alike to fully participate in the political process. Look for voteretail.ca to continue as both a campaign
and an advocacy tool in Provincial elections across the nation in the
years to come.
Finally, as I look ahead to 2016, our thoughts turn to our work with
the new federal government, a retail dollar that continues to be characterized by a low Canadian dollar, uneven growth and an increasing brick and click competitive retail landscape.
