Growth and New Beginnings
Spring is finally here — and with it, a
season of growth and new beginnings . What
better time than now to officially welcome
NAMSS’ new Executive Director, Lynn Boyd!
I hope that you all had a chance to read the
email introducing Lynn that went out last
month . If you haven’t already, I hope you
reach out to Lynn to introduce yourself and
welcome her to the NAMSS team .

constantly working to
make your job easier.
In addition to Lynn’s arrival, there’s
plenty more to report on from NAMSS
headquarters . In early February, NAMSS
compiled a small task force of member
volunteers to review the proposed
regulations that CMS had recently issued
to reduce redundancy, provide clarity, and
ultimately, increase healthcare efficiency .
The task force got right to work and
identified several points of interest to MSPs:
dietician privileging, individual medical
staff’s representation on a multi-hospital
system’s governing body, individual
medical staff requirements for hospitals in a
multi-hospital system, and outpatient orders
from practitioners who are not members
of a hospital’s medical staff . We know that
regulatory updates from CMS often elicit
interpretation anxiety . That’s why we quickly
assembled our team to not only directly
respond to CMS, but to also be on hand to
answer any questions you might have .

NAMSS considers it our privilege to be

That’s why last year, NAMSS responded to
member requests to define the practice of
credentialing by compiling a task force of
volunteers from various hospital settings to
help NAMSS develop an official definition .
A simple task in theory, determining what
is and is not credentialing among the
many different settings proved to be quite
an effort . Still, the task force rose to the
challenge and created a statement that
distinguishes credentialing from other related
duties by identifying the specific roles and
responsibilities of practitioner-credentialing
specialists and outlining credentialing’s
best-practice standard . This definition can
be found in NAMSS’ Glossary of Terms
where we hope it will be a resource for you .
As 2013 continues, we look forward to
advancing programs such as the NAMSS
PASSTM and continuing outreach into other
facets of the healthcare industry — but we
need your support to do it . The NAMSS
2013 Annual Leadership Conference will
be May 2-3, 2013, at the Loews Annapolis
Hotel in Annapolis, Maryland, and is
open to all state affiliates . NAMSS offers
complimentary registration for the state
president and state president-elect to attend .
Your participation as state leaders and active
members is absolutely imperative to our
success, as you are the best spokespeople
for NAMSS at the local level . I hope to see
many of you in Annapolis this May .
As Tolstoy wrote, “Spring is the time of plans
and projects .” Thank you again for allowing
me to serve as your leader during such
exciting times for our organization .
