NIGHTS AT THE MUSEUM:
Finding After-Hours Ambience
When everyone else has gone home with memories of history in their heads,
you get the chance to put yours down upon pieces of that heritage.

FORGET THE EDUCATIONAL overnights in the
museum with your sleeping bag spread on the hard
floor under the unblinking exit lights, kids giggling
and running through the halls. Some museums in the
Blue Ridge region offer civilized overnight lodging
for adults as well as families, giving you another perspective on their site.

From the Cottage at Crab Orchard Museum, guests
can see the morning fog creeping in from the west side
of the valley and the Clinch River, drifting through
the log buildings of Pioneer Park below like so many
ghosts. The anguished bark of a red fox reverberates
through the steep knobs to the east. A cricket chorus
sizzles in the background, joined by katydids' electric

Close your eyes at Crab Orchard in Virginia's Tazewell
County, and you could be in the 19th century - this
ambiance is the beauty of overnighting in the hillside
cottage when staff and visitors have gone home.
"We want to offer our visitors more than a few
hours' tour of museum galleries and Pioneer Park village, so we added a restaurant in the 1907 Pisgah Store
and the guest cottage," says Crab Orchard Museum
Executive Director Charlotte Whitted.
Not that the museum doesn't have a lot to offer;
visitors stroll from prehistoric periods to the 20th century, looking at woolly mammoth molars, colonial
maps, infamous local animals, relics from the 500-yearold Indian Village on the site, a silk wedding dress
fashioned into a Confederate flag, and a bone ring
made from the kneecap of a Rebel soldier. Pioneer
Village's lard house, gardens and transportation
museum are equally tantalizing. But the cottage allows
visitors to immerse themselves in the rural setting.
The two-bedroom house accommodates four in
comfortable style with a gas-flame stove, full kitchen,
