Western North Carolina native Tim Barnwell,
a long-time contributor to this magazine, has
completed five years of work to create a
valuable visual companion for travels along
the Blue Ridge Parkway.
it's an oft-repeated joke between my wife and
me on a hike: She's looking down at the wildflowers,
I'm looking out ahead at the terrain. "Hey," I say, all
pleased with my sighting, "you know what mountain
that is up there?" And she, no matter the locale and
often without even looking up: "The Peaks of Otter."
Tim Barnwell's new book will both give me all
kinds of new knowledge about what I'm looking at
along the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway, and also
invite Gail to pick her eyes up a little.
In 120 informative, comprehensive, pretty pages,
Barnwell presents identification of every mountain
and landmark visible from every Blue Ridge Parkway
overlook. The visuals alone could carry the book, but
Barnwell adds both text and context to each, covering
access, geography and geology, bits of history; and
often includes smaller detail photos of signature
points within the overall viewshed photo. The following pages offer a few samples from the book.
