Photo Essay
Blooms 'n' Bugs
With summer as our fancy, our love
turns to wildflowers. And if you like
to take pictures, any camera will do,
but if you have one that will take
different lenses, award-winning
photos can come easily. Tips follow.

Above: It's often that an insect will pose for us, but this bee seems to be saying "take me,
take me." And though our regular camera lens usually will not allow us to get close to the
subject and still focus, the extension tube provides magnification, and also allows us to
get closer to the subject. The closer we get the more the background falls away, making
for a nice look.
Right: This handsome pickerel rush and bumblebee in flight were shot against a pond,
with a Sony a6000 camera and telephoto lens with extension tube on a tripod.
Far right: Sometimes backgrounds are distracting. If we move the camera so that there
is a natural space, preferably dark, behind the subject, we can lose those distractions
completely, as here with the bee working over this tickseed sunflower. To further drop
the background, use the flash that's on the camera to illuminate the subject. When the
flash reaches the subject, it goes no further, helping the background disappear. To
soften the flash use a handkerchief over the flash to cut down the intensity.
