The top three Outstanding Showroom winners were (in no particular order) Megavision (located within the 7W New York building), Adel Rootstein Mannequins (located at 205 W. 19th St.) and Hudson & Broad (located at 174 Hudson St.). Megavision’s new space focused on an authentic, antique feel, with every detail incorporated impeccably for a unique showroom experience. Richard Rollison, vice president, business development, Megavision Inc., said he was inspired by an article from The New York Times Style section, which he had pinned to his office wall when he first considered joining the Megavision team last July. The article, entitled “The New Antiquarians,” was about the rediscovery of quirky antique furnishings—think taxidermy, Victorian hair boxes and 19th-century shop fittings—by young Williamsburg (Brooklyn) hipsters. Gleaning tips from the Antiquarian blog Hollister Hovey, Rollison reinvented classic design for the Megavision showroom. “The real stars though are the fixtures—the fun clash of thick acrylic shelves or bright orange lacquer with an ‘aged’ metal sunglass fixture that could double as an art piece,” he says. “The customers came and responded overwhelmingly. There is no better feeling than that.” Adel Rootstein Mannequins unveiled a dramatic, theatrical showroom design, featuring American Indian-themed designs and striking colors against a black background, with video and audio to complete the scene. The showroom installation was designed by artistic director and company figurehead, Kevin Arpino, as a tribute to the creative spirit of American Indian culture. “The moving images projected onto the scrims are all original photographs taken during the early 20th century, while the mannequins themselves represent fashion and style in the early 21st century,” explains Michael Steward, executive vice president, Rootstein Mannequins. “While looking back with sadness to the decimation of this colorful and unique heritage, we look forward and reflect on the beauty and poignancy that the original people of The Americas have tacitly left for us.” Hudson & Broad’s showroom offered a visual treat for the eyes, featuring a bright, open layout, with product displayed artfully and creative touches throughout. Congratulations to the Outstanding Showroom winners for NADI’s Retail Design Collective 2009. —JESSIE BOVE, MANAGING EDITOR Photo: Courtesy of Rootstein | Hudson & Broad Hudson & Broad January/February 2010 www.ddimagazine.com http://www.ddimagazine.com
