32 | Foodie paradise Canadian grocer Longo’s pulls out all the stops at its latest Toronto flagship oronto’s Maple Leaf Square was an urban development years in the making. At the heart of it all is Air Canada Centre, a huge sports and entertainment complex, but the Square is really a one-stop shop complete with offices, condos, restaurants and a boutique hotel, all covering nearly 17 miles of an underground network of shopping. Given Maple Leaf Square’s whole-lifestyle approach and its appeal to tourists, Longo Brothers Fruit Markets Inc.’s new 48,000-sq.-ft. flagship T supermarket—featuring all of the usual staples plus numerous gourmet touches—fits right in. Store highlights include a cornucopia of fresh grab-andgo items, a beer and wine bar, and a chocolatier. To make the store come to life, Longo’s once again turned to Toronto-based Watt International Inc., which has been its agency of record for the past 12 years. “We applied all of our store design decisions against our ‘brand filter,’ and the end result is a retail experience that moves customer impressions of our business in the right direction,” Top: An 18-ft.-high column is cleverly disguised as a giant chocolate bar. Bottom: The store’s graphics tell a unique story, and even extend to the elevators.
