I went from sleeping in a very nice hotel room on the Las Vegas Strip to sleeping on the cold red clay in a nylon tent. In about 24 hours time, I went from the bright lights and glitz of Vegas to the glow of the limitless stars in the clear night sky, from the smoky casinos to the wafting smoke of the warm and glowing fire. It was like being on two completely different worlds—sort of like the difference between this year’s version of GlobalShop and the last couple of iterations. GlobalShop is merely a reflection of the industry it serves. If 2009 could be summarized as “uncertainty and malaise” and 2010 as “cautious optimism,” then the catch-phrase for GlobalShop 2011 might be: “We’re on our way back!” It was a revelation to experience this show; the energy and optimism were boundless. On paper, the show was better. There were more exhibitors, more attendees and a larger show floor. More people attended conference sessions and special events, and there were more hotel rooms booked. More than that, there was a better and seemingly universal “feel” about this show. People were smiling and having a good time. Business was being done. The show looked better, with incredible booth designs and innovative new products. More than anything else, it was the intangibles that told us something was different, something is happening. To everyone who took part in this year’s show, we offer our genuine and heartfelt thanks. It was a real privilege to be involved. We’re already looking forward to next year and hope you are, too.
