10 | From the Show Director GlobalShop2013 What’s so global about GlobalShop? hat’s so global about GlobalShop? That’s a great question and one I’ve heard a few times. After all, if you’re going to call the show GlobalShop, shouldn’t it have an international flavor? We think so! The Trade Show News Network (TSNN) recently named GlobalShop the fastest-growing tradeshow across all industries by attendance. A big reason for that is the effort we’ve put in to growing our international audience. Some might not realize that GlobalShop already has a large and growing international component. In 2012, 22 percent of our qualified GlobalShop attendees were from outside of the United States. They came from 48 countries—from Argentina to Venezuela, and as far away as New Zealand and South Africa (and as close as our neighbors in Canada and Mexico). There were representatives from every continent, with the exception of Antarctica. We’re confident we’ll remedy that as retail gets a better foothold at the South Pole. Sixteen percent of exhibiting companies already confirmed for 2013 are from outside the United States, with 13 countries represented. Canada and China are bringing the largest contingents, but there is good representation from Europe as well. The world has become more international, and retail certainly reflects that. So too does retail’s premier exposition—GlobalShop. Addressing international markets is very important to us, because we know that is where much of the opportunity lies. We’re committed to making sure that we’re providing compelling reasons for international attendees to visit GlobalShop and for international suppliers to exhibit. In 2012, we launched our first Spanish-language sessions at GlobalShop. These were wellattended and received very good reviews. Our colleague Rick Parra from Nielsen Latin America led a session on retail trends in Latin America, and Daniel Montaño from Little presented on branding. Because of these successes, we’re going to be featuring more Spanish-language sessions in 2013, and will market to Latin American retailers to let them know what we have to offer. Brazil is a tremendous growth market for retail, and we’ll be addressing this in 2013 with Portuguese-language sessions at GlobalShop. We currently are working with various associations, retailers and design firms in Brazil to round out our offerings and attract retail designers and brand marketers from Brazil to attend the show. We’re excited about our progress and the opportunity. With 22 percent of our attendees, 16 percent of our exhibitors, Spanish and Portuguese conference sessions, and significant outreach to international communities all part of our program, GlobalShop is well on its way to truly becoming a global show. We hope to see you there to be a part of it!
