style and created a new look by incorporating classic architectural design elements into the materials used, including wall coverings, carpeting, fixtures, and furnishings. The ballroom refurbishment is one component of the Hilton New York’s overall capital improvement program, which also includes a renovation of the hotel’s guest rooms. Since 2005, the hotel has invested more than $80 million in refurbishing approximately 1,000 of its 1,980 rooms and suites. Hyatt has opened its first Andaz hotel in New York City with the Andaz Wall Street. The property, which has 253 guest rooms and nearly 6,000 sf of meeting space, is the only hotel situated on Wall Street itself. Designed by David Rockwell and the Rockwell Group, the 13-floor hotel features a bar, a gym, a spa, and an onsite restaurant, Wall & Water, which houses a chef ’s table, an open kitchen, and a private dining room. The hotel’s meeting space, called the Andaz Studio, includes five distinct meeting rooms—or “Studio” spaces— that offer a “home-like ambiance with comfortable, residential style furniture.” The Andaz Studio’s highlight, according to the hotel, is a communal kitchen where chefs create fresh, cooked-toorder fare while interacting with guests during meeting breaks or meals. Candlewood Suites has made its New York City debut with a 188-key new-build property near Times Square, touted as the city’s first mid-scale extended-stay hotel. Starwood Hotels is removing the Sheraton flag from the Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square and is operating it as an independent while exploring redevelopment opportunities. Starwood has also announced a $90 million renovation to the Sheraton New York. The redevelopment is illustrative of Starwood’s bullish growth plans in New York City. Starwood has more hotels in New York City than anywhere in the world—it currently operates 13 hotels in the city, with plans to open six more in 2010, including two Sheraton properties in Brooklyn and Tribeca, the W New York Downtown, and the Four Points by Sheraton Long Island City. In addition, Starwood will bring its two newest brands to the Big Apple with the openings of Aloft New York Brooklyn and Element New York Times Square West, bringing its total number of New York City properties to 19.
