Different from their baby boomer and Generation X predecessors, they are not willing to achieve at the expense of their families and friends, though. They tend to be very teamand community-oriented: How many of you didn’t discuss your high school community service involvement on your college applications? Perhaps most interesting, Gen Y is a group that has returned to more conventional roots. They like their parents, listen to their music and are not interested in rebelling against them or anyone else for that matter. Finally, they are also the most technologically connected generation yet. Consistent with this profile, Gen Y is interested in a different type of workplace, too. Research has shown that Millennials tend to desire work/family balance, flexibility, friendships with associates and a life outside of work much more than they require a job with a high salary. In addition, these individuals are motivated by challenging work that is dynamic and requires creativity and responsibility. In attempting to understand this emerging group of www.nsbe.org ith downsizing, layoffs and a changing economy, a new generation is entering the workplace, and many say these new professionals are different from the generations that preceded them. They have been called “Generation Y,” or “Millennials,” a term that was brought into the public arena in 2000 by Neil Howe and William Strauss in their book “Millennials Rising.” Since then, a profile of this new generation has started to emerge. Millennials were born between 1982 and 2000 and have no memory of the Cold War. They’re special; just ask their overprotective baby boomer parents. And they’ve been sheltered by these doting parents. This generation has given us the term “helicopter parent,” referring to parents who tend to hover over their child’s every activity. As a result, they are also very confident and expected to achieve. They’re the first generation born into a culture of accountability, evidenced by school mastery september/october 2008 •
