Ae members ON ThE mOvE Michael G. Shinn, NSBE lifetime member, founder of NSBE’s fellows Program and one of the early organizers of NSBE’s Board of corporate Affiliates, has received the top alumni award from his alma mater, the University of Kansas School of Engineering. Shinn and two other KU alumni received the Distinguished Engineering Service Award at the Kansas memorial Union in may. Shinn retired from General Electric company in 1999 after 31 years of service as an engineer, manager and corporate staff consultant. Now a certified financial planner for financial Network Investment corporation, he writes the nationally syndicated column “Your money really matters.” Tarolyn Buckles of the Detroit, mich., Alumni chapter has been promoted from project engineer to diversity manager at ArcADIS U.S., Inc. Buckles is the first person to hold her new title at the $2-billion, Netherlands-based environmental and infrastructure engineering consulting services firm, but she says Robert L. Howard Jr., Ph.D., lab manager for NASA’s Habitability Design center, told about his work designing lunar dwellings in the July 2008 issue of Smithsonian magazine. At age 36, Dr. Howard, who works at NASA’s Johnson Space center in Houston, texas, is a major part of the nation’s plans to send humans back to the moon by 2020, and then on to mars. Dr. Howard received his doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of tennessee Space Institute and has received numerous honors for his work, among them the NASA Group Achievement Award for orbiter Upgrade Definition team and NSBE’s Golden torch Alumni member of the Year and Graduate Student of the Year Awards. ArcADIS “has always expressed a commitment to diversity.” In her new position, she is responsible for initiatives including university and faculty partnerships, internships, scholarships, internal mentoring/coaching programs and affinity groups, among many others. Buckles received her B.Sc. in civil/structural engineering from the University of michigan and has more than 18 years’ experience with environmental and transportation engineering projects. She was chair of NSBE’s Detroit Alumni chapter from 1999 to 2002. thanks due largely to a contact she made at NSBE’s 2008 Annual National convention, AE member Marie Antoinette Armstrong has joined Genentech Inc. as an associate engineer in Portland, ore. Armstrong, 23, earned her B.Sc. in chemical engineering from Western michigan University in 2006. this year, she attended the career Engineer Networking Suite sponsored by NSBE Board of corporate Affiliates member Genentech, seeking contract validation opportunities for the company she was employed by then. the Genentech rep was impressed by her pitch, and less than three months later, the biotech company offered her the job she is calling “the opportunity of a lifetime.” Armstrong joined NSBE in 2003 as an undergraduate at Western michigan University and, after graduating, single-handedly rechartered NSBE’s West michigan Alumni Extension. 68 • september/october 2008 • www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
