From the NationalChair The P.O.W.E.R. to Move By Stevenson a. Dunn Jr. NSBE National Chair A $12-million operating budget. A membership base of 31,000 and counting. A network of black technical talent that spans the entire globe. NSBE has indeed come a long way from 1975, and we intend to go much further. However, as we grow as an organization and become more powerful as a result, we must remain true to our mission and develop an even greater sense of responsibility to our community. “With great power comes great responsibility.” The NSBE P.O.W.E.R. Movement is about renewing and reviving our activism, both inside of our Society and in the world. The reason I’m calling it the P.O.W.E.R. Movement is simple: A movement causes things to happen. It makes an impact. It takes potential and makes it kinetic. “P.O.W.E.R.” also stands for NSBE’s National Directives for the year: “P” for Professional Excellence, “O” for Outreach, “W” for Worldwide Impact, “E” for Engineering Excellence and “R” for Recruitment and Retention. Without action, NSBE’s P.O.W.E.R. becomes just words, facts and figures on a page. So, to implement our directives, the National Executive Board has tied each one to a NSBE “Signature Program.” The “NSBEpreneur” program is driving Professional Excellence. Our “Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Camp” is the frontline program for Outreach. Worldwide Impact is being made by our “Technical OutReach Community Help” or “T.O.R.C.H.” program. Our “Special Interest Groups” (“SIGs”) are charged with bringing about Engineering Excellence. And we have pledged to increase Recruitment and Retention through the Signature program called “Achiever’s Plus.” A movement doesn’t happen with a handful of people. It happens when every individual takes ownership of the mission. It’s time for us all to own NSBE’s mission, get involved and show our P.O.W.E.R.!! Family, we need to embrace a saying from my hometown, Brooklyn, N.Y.: “Go hard, or go home.” As I begin my term as national chair, I challenge each one of you to bring this attitude into NSBE. We can push ourselves — academically, professionally, culturally and in our communities — to a whole new level of P.O.W.E.R. ■ “…The NSBE P.O.W.E.R. Movement is about renewing and reviving our activism, both inside of our Society and in the world.” 2008–09 NsBe National directives Professional excellence outreach worldwide impact engineering excellence recruitment and Retention www.nsbe.org • september/october 2008 • 9
