tHE ProgrAms zONE O A wAlk for EduCAtION n April 25, 2009, NSBE members and other volunteers will take to the streets in all six NSBE regions in the U.S., and in Toronto, Canada, to promote the importance of finishing high school and getting a college degree, during the organization’s A Walk for Education (AWFE). Now in its fourth year as an international program, A Walk for Education is tentatively scheduled to take place in the following cities: Buffalo, N.Y., in Region I; Richmond, Va., in Region II; Birmingham, Ala., in Region III; Detroit, Mich., in Region IV; St. Louis, Mo., in Region V; North Oakland, Calif., in Region VI and in Toronto, Canada. “We are not just excited about AWFE itself this year but also the effort to establish a Technical OutReach Community Help (T.O.R.C.H.) center or NSBE Jr. chapter in the area of each walk,” says A Walk for Education Chair Lauren Thomas. “Providing NSBE sustaining programs beyond the single day of AWFE provides the opportunity to have a long-term impact on each community. If every member gave just two hours in the NSBE year at a T.O.R.C.H. Center or Pre-College Initiative program, we would ‘positively impact the community’ like never before.” Adds A Walk for Education Cochair Brittany Williams: “My vision for A Walk for Education this year is to see NSBE members and the local community come together to empower young students to fulfill higher education.
