aE MEMBERS ON ThE mOvE Former nSbe national chair Darryl A. Dickerson has received his doctorate in biomedical engineering from purdue University. dr. dickerson successfully defended his thesis in april on “the development of an orthopedic interface structure derived from natural biomaterials for interface tissue regeneration.” He recently launched a biomedical company, bioRegeneration Technologies, to apply his research, which may help millions of people, including the elderly and athletes, who suffer from tissue damage. “While speaking with his major advisor, the resounding compliment to darryl was not only his genius but his relentless service to young people through his involvement with nSbe and minority engineering programs,” wrote nSbe national advisor Virginia booth-gleghorn. dr. dickerson graduated from purdue with a 3.8-plus gpa. Tamara Y. Crawford, a member of nSbe’s lockheed martin aeronautics company chapter in Ft. Worth, Texas, was the sole recipient of the 2009 Outstanding young alumni of the year honor from her alma mater, the University of mississippi (“Ole miss”). The award honors graduates who have made significant contributions to the university, their community and their profession. crawford contributes to many programs and activities as a volunteer, among them the ashanti community, a large, inner city outreach program conducted by her church in dallas, Texas. She is chair/leader of the program, which is designed to equip girls aged eight to 18 with life skills for their transition to womanhood. during the day, crawford is an aeronautical engineer senior for lockheed martin’s F-22 Raptor program. She received her bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Ole miss and an m.S. in systems engineering from Southern methodist University. nSbe-ae’s Michael L. Washington, Ph.D. has joined the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta, ga., as deputy director of the preparedness modeling Unit. previously, he was an industrial engineer/health systems specialist for the navy medicine Support command. His unit at the cdc works with models for transmissible disease epidemics, food-borne disease outbreaks, toxic exposures, calamitous weatherrelated events, terrorism events and other problems. in July, he traveled to Uganda to train U.S. and african graduate students in economic epidemiological modeling. dr. Washington received his bachelor’s in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Florida and his master’s and doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of South Florida. another member of nSbe’s lockheed martin aeronautics company chapter in Ft. Worth, Ian (“Tony”) Browne, received two honors recently. in June, lockheed martin corporation presented him with a JSF milestone recognition for his work on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. as Radar System integration and Test lead on the project, browne performed testing that provided early identification of system anomalies that could have negatively impacted aircraft performance. earlier, in may, lockheed martin aeronautics presented him with its aeroStar award. This award honors “individuals and teams who make things happen, take on new challenges and never accept anything but the best.” browne travels annually to West africa, and while there in 2008, he distributed 100 pounds of clothes and toys he had collected from nSbe members and others. 70 • career engineer • fall 2009 • www.nsbe.org
