nSBe Penn State Endowment Seeks Believers B y E r i c A d d i s o n
NSBE’s Penn State chapter launched an endowment fund in Spring 2009 to support multicultural undergraduate students.
J
oseph Okelarin held many leadership positions with NSBE during his time as an undergraduate at The Pennsylvania State University. His main goal was to create an endowment to help the Multicultural Engineering Program at Penn State fund young people who have aspirations of becoming undergraduate students in engineering. The current economic crisis proved to be the impetus needed to make Okelarin’s vision real. The NSBE Penn State chapter’s endowment fund was spawned in Spring 2009 with a joint first donation. These combined donations have helped the chapter pursue NSBE’s mission by moving the group toward financial independence. Improving the chapter’s financial condition in this way will allow it to provide scholarships, grants and study abroad experiences for “multicultural engineering students,” as defined by the university’s Multicultural Engineering Program. The endowment is largely the result of Okelarin’s previous work with NSBE
Penn State’s Executive Board. Okelarin, who now works for EA Technologies as a project engineer, continues to keep in touch with Penn State to assist NSBE and the Multicultural Engineering Program in any way possible. The goal of the endowment fund is to reach its first fundraising milestone of $25,000 within the next five years. In doing this, the chapter hopes to give students the opportunity to reach their own goals of becoming engineers, by aiding them with scholarship opportunities. Chapter members also hope NSBE Penn State’s giving spirit becomes contagious and that other NSBE chapters worldwide begin to give back to their student bodies to further the NSBE mission. To further this cause and make a donation, please visit the NSBE Penn State Endowment homepage at http:// www.engr.psu.edu/nsbe/New_Site/ endowment.html. At the website: • Type in the total amount you would like to donate
• Fill out the form on the page • Select “Other” in the “Please Designate My Gift To:” cell of the “Designation of Gift Section” • In the “Additional Information Section” type in: “For The National Society of Black Engineers allocation number5CDMU” Note: Do not forget to fill in the “Additional Information Section” as explained above. This information allows the officers in charge to know where to allocate your donation. You can also make donations to the endowment fund by check. Please make your check payable to Penn State, and write “NSBE Endowment” in the memo section. Mail your check to: National Society of Black Engineers Attn: Endowment Chair 208 Hammond Bldg.
