Miller of NsBe’s region IV for being selected as one of the three recipients of this honor for 2011! she received the award during the 37th NsBe annual convention in st. louis, Mo., last March. the other two recipients were profiled in the convention 2011 issue of NSBE Magazine. mIKE ShINN DISTINGuIShED mEmBER OF ThE YEAR (FEmALE) Shadeequa D. miller Ph.D. Student in Human Computer Interaction University of Wisconsin–Madison s hadeequa D. Miller is a doctoral student in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where her current research interests are human factors, usability, user-interface design, human-computer interaction, mobile computing in healthcare, gerontology, medical devices, health information technology and cultural ergonomics. Miller received her Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her Master of Science in industrial and systems engineering from Virginia Tech. Before pursuing advanced degrees, she was a science education analyst at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and also worked at the National Academies. During the summer of 2009, she was appointed a Graduate Engineering Education Fellow for the National Academy of Engineering. Miller was NSBE’s 2007–08 national Academic Excellence chair and has served the Society in numerous in other leadership positions on the chapter, regional and national levels. Among her many contributions to organizations other than NSBE, she helped establish the National Science Foundation’s Science Assistant Community Outreach for middle school and high school students. Her career goal is to be a university professor of engineering or product design. ■ N ‘BroTHer foUnder’ DONATES $100K TO NSBE SBE National Advisory Board Chair Tony Harris has made a personal gift of $100,000 to the National Society of Black Engineers. The funds will be used to support NSBE’s Retention Program: a national initiative to increase the percentage of black engineering students who remain in the field and obtain a bachelor’s degree. Harris is one of NSBE’s “Chicago Six,” the six students who founded the Society at Purdue University in 1975. “As a founding member of this organization, Tony has been a guiding light for the National Society of Black Engineers,” says NSBE National Chair Calvin Phelps. “In his role as a national advisor, and now with this gift to support NSBE’s retention efforts, he continues to be an inspiration, a reminder of the ideals of excellence and success upon which the organization was founded.” “To my knowledge, this is the largest gift ever given by a NSBE member to NSBE,” adds NSBE Executive Director Carl B. Mack. “As such, how wonderful that it is made by a FOUNDER — ‘Brother Founder,’ Tony Harris! Furthermore, it makes sense that Brother Founder would specify that his gift go toward the cause that gave birth to NSBE: retention of blacks in engineering.” For his part, Harris encourages other NSBE members to follow his lead in giving. “I have long supported the strategic objective of diversifying our revenue stream,” he says. “As much as we appreciate our corporate contributors, we should not leave NSBE’s mission dependent solely on their largess. “My wife and I are honored to lead the way with this gift that reflects our belief in NSBE’s mission, its model and its management, as well as Tony harris, nsBe national advisory our personal belief that, Board Chair ‘Of those to whom much is given, much is expected,’ ” Harris adds. “I know there are many high-net-worth individuals out there who likewise believe in NSBE and are willing to support it with their time, talents and wealth.” ■ • CAREER ENGINEER • fall 2011 • 63 www.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
