Hall iii A s a little girl, Pamela Jackson Hall dreamed of someday becoming an engineer and working for Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, the giant utility that serves Baltimore and most of central Maryland. for intensive care units. Hall leads teams in Madison, Wis., and Bangalore, India, whose goal is to create cost-effective solutions to improve respiratory care in rural and developed markets. Almost every engineer has a story like this, about how, when and why they caught the bug that launched them on their careers. Call it an origin story, as if they were members of the legion of superheroes: Peter Parker getting bitten by a radioactive spider and becoming Spiderman, Bruce Banner bombarded by gamma rays and being transformed into the Hulk. Last year, the National Society of Black Engineers expanded its 20-year partnership with the African American Forum at GE to ensure that more young people get bitten by that bug at an even earlier age. “The goal of the partnership is to use GE’s network of African-American engineers to recruit the best and brightest young professionals to career opportunities at the company, retain them and promote them to higher positions,” says Hall, one of the African American Forum’s operating leaders, along with Curtis Howse and Ernest Marshall. www.nsbe.org “At a young age, I thought BG&E was the dream job!” she says. “I didn’t know much about how the company worked. At 12 years old, I really didn’t know much about being an engineer. But we had a power plant near my home, and I was just fascinated by the whole mysterious, futuristic way it looked…. It looked like progress. Visually, that’s what I thought engineering was all about.” Hall never went to work for BG&E. Pamela Hall But her fascination with the plant near her home inspired her to want to learn more about the power industry, and that exploration led her to a bachelor’s degree in physics and math, while founding a NSBE Chapter at Delaware State and receiving master’s degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University.
