In the past three months, I’ve seen a renewed focus from demand-side companies making significant commitments to training suppliers to increase their level of spend over the next few years. In other words, they’re outsourcing. Despite some negative perceptions, outsourcing provides the potential for job creation for training professionals, especially in this market. This strategy of buyers of training services increasing their use of variable and experienced staff to restart training initiatives is becoming more prevalent. So why not staff the training department with internal resources? In many cases they will. But sourcing administrative, instructional design and delivery professionals with external service companies gives training leaders the flexibility needed to scale up with the growth in activity. From where I sit, the upturn in training activity has a lot to do with the idea that buy-side companies see light at the end of the recessionary tunnel. They are beginning to gear up for a new wave of training for new hires in roles such as sales, software development, engineering, customer support and many more. Companies that reduced workforces during the recession also tended to do little training of existing staff during this time, and reduced training department resources. Now the need is to get courseware and programs ready for the waves of new hires that will support a reenergized business. Don’t be surprised if these companies turn to, and stay with, the outsourcing model for quite some time.
