Your Turn Support for a campaign Appreciation for editing BEST DIPLOMACY I was so heartened to read President Quigley’s recent op-ed piece in the Baltimore Sun and From the President in the Winter edition of Worldview explaining the “More Peace Corps” campaign. It’s needed now more than ever, not only because the development demands of this world seem to be growing rather than shrinking, but because Peace Corps is the best public diplomacy America has going right now. While I’ve always been proud to be a RPCV, my last five months traveling through the Caucasus and Central Asia has made me even more proud. I’ve seen first-hand through chance meetings with PCVs, students and coworkers the potential of Peace Corps not only to improve communities, but to restore America’s public image and trust abroad. In many of these communities, Peace Corps is the only interaction with living Americans; this helps counteract the images of America seen on local and Russian TV. I was always honored when someone would ask if I was a PCV upon arrival in a new place. In Uzbekistan, where Peace Corps had to leave due to security and political problems in 2004, former students asked me what they could do to bring Peace Corps back. In Turkmenistan, still a very closed country, I met a young teenager in a park who was a PCV student. She was ready to take on the world and I can’t help but think that her teacher had something to do with that. She gave me hope in Turkmenistan’s next generation making needed changes for the country. Audrey Scott Estonia 98-00 THANK YOU In 1993, when David arrived at the NPCA, WorldView magazine was thin and struggling. It contained a few quality articles but lacked the substance, respect, or exposure to actually present a view of the world as seen from a Peace Corps perspective. David attracted top-quality writers, developed a new format and doubled the pages and introduced exquisite photography that enabled Jim Collins to attract substantial advertising revenue. Together, they consistently produced a marvelous magazine. Several global development experts have praised WorldView as the very best magazine anywhere about the developing countries of the world. David defended the value and the integrity of the magazine in the face of critics who wanted WorldView to become an alumni magazine about Peace Corps volunteers and returned volunteers, but not about the world we claim to embrace. Sometimes, he had to defend his high journalistic standards in the face of bosses who wanted to impose their points of view on the editorial content. at was me. David gave the NPCA and the Peace Corps community 14 years of quality and distinction. He is moving on to focus on the Horn of Africa, his Peace Corps volunteer site, with Voice of America, and that troubled region will be the beneficiary. As he leaves, all of us say thank you, David, for enriching our view of the world. Charles F.
