SOLUTIONS
FOR A CHANGING MARKET
AMF BAKERY SYSTEMS' INTEGRATED
APPROACH BRINGS CONTINUITY OF
SUPPORT TO AN EVOLVING MARKET

I

n today's wholesale baking industry, bread and
bun producers need all the flexibility they can
get. That's why AMF Bakery Systems began
eyeing changes in the marketplace years ago
when talk throughout the industry began to shift
toward commercial artisan bread production.
"Our industry has been trying for decades to figure
out how to bring more artisanal, specialty baked
products into high-volume production bakeries,"
said Ken Newsome, AMF Bakery Systems CEO.
The once whispers of "what could be" have
come to fruition as bakeries diversify their product
portfolios with a variety of breads, buns and artisan
products made on one high-speed line. Mr.
Newsome credited four macro trends for turning
the tides: US bakery consolidation, increased
automation, specialization for a wider variety of
products, and overall globalization of the industry.
After several internal development projects and
extensive market research, AMF identified sheeting
technology as the next big step, which led to the
2012 acquisition of Tromp Group, the European
gold standard for sheeting and laminating
equipment. This brought Tromp Sheeting and
Depositing Systems and its sister company Den
Boer Baking Systems into the organization's

business portfolio. "We believed that as an industry
leader, we should be the ones creating technical
breakthroughs rather than the incumbent fighting
innovation," Mr. Newsome said.
To stay ahead of these trends, AMF focused on
globalization with manufacturing plants in the
Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific, as well as having
the largest plant in China of any US or European
bakery equipment manufacturer. This ultimately led
to a strategic restructuring with the integration of
Tromp Sheeting and Depositing Systems and Den
Boer Baking Systems into the company.
AMF now leverages global resources to
serve customers producing artisan breads or
integrating artisan products into traditional bread
and bun lines. Jason Ward, president, AMF Bakery
Systems, reiterated how these market changes
prompted the integration. "Now, we're seeing at a
much higher rate, and with a more concentrated
customer base, the desire to make a wider variety
of products," he said.
As the global leader in complete bakery
systems, AMF will now leverage the reputation
and expertise of AMF Tromp and AMF Den Boer
to become the partner of choice for bakers
worldwide across the widest range of products.
