High-Tech Anxiety
On her cell phone, my 11-year-old daughter has already learned how to record and use voice recognition commands to call the most important numbers in her address book. She has three: Mom, Dad and pizza. Meanwhile, I am still trying to figure out how to tap the tiny voicemail playback button on my new iPhone 4 with my big fat finger. Is it just me, or is new technology geared exclusively for the young and nimble? No one would ever call me a luddite because I do not fear technology. But I will admit to being intimidated by the notion of being left behind by the advances of a new generation. I no longer sleep well at night, and often wake up in the wee hours of the morning to check my email, perhaps afraid that I’ve missed something. What seldom occurs to me, though, is that even if there is a problem at work, whatever could I do at 3 a.m. to fix it? So, from this day forward, I vow to embrace technology where it helps make my life easier and try to avoid obsessing about everything else I can’t control. In other words, don’t sweat the small stuff. This personal pledge is not meant to discourage others from investing in new technology. Quite the opposite. I am a strong believer in its power and importance. Technology can enhance our lives, make our jobs easier to perform, and help our companies improve profitability. All great things. I just need a little help sometimes figuring out how to play back my voicemail messages. Next time, maybe I’ll ask my daughter.
