4th Annual
Wetdashe Outrigger Dry Change Race
The 4th Annual Wetdashe Outrigger
Dry Change Race was held at Fairway
Gorge Paddling Club in Victoria BC.
The race is held as part of Movember,
and has a goal of raising awareness for
men's health issues.
Wetdashe offers friendly competition
for experienced crews and provides
an opportunity for novice paddlers to
experience a change race without the
chill of the wintry waters of the Pacific
in November.
This year's event was the largest
Wetdashe yet, with 28 mixed crews
of 12 paddlers from clubs across the
Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the
Pacific Northwest. Each crew paddled
either a 12 km or 24 km course, and
swapped out the entire crew via a dry
change on the dock after each 3km lap.
Thanks to the support of paddlers
and the community, Wetdashe
raised $11,000 that was donated to
Movember Canada and Island Prostate
Centre to assist families dealing with
the consequences of prostate cancer.
Open Ocean catered the event and
worked with racers to help provide over
300 meals to a local shelter through
the MealShare program. Mealshare is
a non-profit organization with a goal
to end hunger! Each time a paddler
bought a meal from Open Ocean, a
meal was supplied to someone in need.
Vancouver crew Here For The Fish
Tacos took the 12km course with a
strong showing of 1:06:04. False Creek
Racing Canoe Club crew Wet Wedgies
took top honours in the 24km course
with a time of 2:02:58.
Mahalo Nui Loa to Fairway Gorge
Paddling Club for hosting the event
and all the Cold Water Ohana paddlers
who helped with all the organizing that
went into putting this great event on,
and a special thanks to all of our event
sponsors.
See you on the water for next year's
Wetdashe.
