Maui Canoe & Kayak Club Maliko Start The word from Maui has been makani — wind, wind and more wind. With La Nina conditions in full swing, The Valley Isle's downwind runs have been nothing short of epic! Reports have been coming in from not only the Maliko Run, but from the Kihei Run, the Pailolo and elsewhere about unbelievable downwind conditions. Such was the case on February 25th, when a record turnout of nearly 200 paddlers from Maui, the Neighbor Islands and elsewhere were treated to excellent Maliko downwind conditions in the Outrigger Pizza Maliko Memories Race. To keep running, truly testing everyone's course knowllucky, as the sea ate his OC-1 for lunch! everyone on their toes, a solid north swell was also edge. One paddler in fact, Lee Moyers, wasn't so For the paddlers who seek another downwind adventure, April 21st is our Epic/Aloha Remodeling North Shore Challenge race that runs a 24 mile long course from Keanae to Kahului Harbor or a 10 mile short course from Maliko Bay to Kahului Harbor; this will be a great race to warm up before Group photo at Maliko our signature event! Maui to Molokai (M2M) the last Saturday in April as we will get out into the Pailolo Channel for what is undoubtedly one of the best downwind- Mark your calendars for our signature race, ers on Earth.
