This new year will be another exciting one for paddlers. The single and double outrigger canoe interest and participation is growing fast. More high school students are being introduced to the sport with the OIA organization - and Baywatch is exposing our sport to the world. Perhaps one day our state sport will take precedence over high school coverage on television. 2000 is going to be the "Year of the Canoe" with events planned to introduce the public to Hawaii's team sport. Maui will also continue to host the "Festival of Canoes." Our sport unites people of all ages and professions. It teaches responsibility and trust. It is also a place where friends are made.
