P3 Masters Waa Kaukahi Relay Canoe Race Photos by PF Bentley Group portrait just before the race at Honokohau Harbor. On November 6th, one of the last races of the (I wont use the M word) year took place off the Big Island of Hawaii. The event was sponsored by the Polynesian Paddling Products store in KailuaKona. The relay was just over 11 miles long. The first leg of the race was five miles from Honokohau Harbor to the Coast Guard Buoy, then over to Kamakahonu Beach by the Kailua Pier. The second leg was from Kamakahonu Beach to Keauhou Bay, a 6.2 mile course. Together the two legs were like a relay, and the times were added together to get the crew time. Overall winners were; first overall, the OC-2 Masters crew of Lambert Lee Loy and Ken Powell, 40:28, and Abbott Galaher and David Ayau, 53:54, with a total time of 1:34:22. Second and the first OC-1 was the Senior Masters team of Leo Santimer, 46:24, and Mike McQuaid, 56:33, totalling 1:42:57. The Third overall team was the Mixed OC-2 crew of Bruce and Just after the start (front to rear) Greg Asbell, Randy Botti and Curtis Yamauchi jockey for position. The race starts at the buoy outside Honokohau Harbor. Carol Clifford, 45:06, and Bob Bruce and Penny Merryman, 58:12, totalling 1:43:18. The fastest women of the day was the team of Amy Young, 49:35, and Susan Cordell, 1:03:09, winning with a time of 1:52:44. A total of 27 teams competed totalling 62 paddlers in all. 26 Pacific Paddler, December 1999 Curtis Yamauchi, who with Patty Eames won 1st Place OC-1 Sr. Masters Mixed, rounds the Coast Guard buoy in Kailua Bay heading toward Kamakahonu Beach.
