Surprise! How Fast Do Retirees 'Decumulate' 401(k)s?
How quickly do we blow through what often takes a lifetime to accumulate?
The Employee Benefit Research Institute found out. EBRI studied the extent to which the non-housing
assets of certain retirees changed during their first 20 years of retirement (or until death, if earlier).
The study relied on income and asset data from its Health and Retirement Study (HRS), as well as
on spending data from the Consumption and Activities Mail Survey (CAMS).
Surprisingly (at least to some), it showed that retirees generally exhibit very slow decumulation
of assets.
More specifically, within the first 18 years of retirement:
* Individuals with less than $200,000 in non-housing assets immediately before retirement had
spent down (at the median) about one-quarter of their assets.
* Those with between $200,000 and $500,000 immediately before retirement had spent down 27.2
percent.
* Retirees with at least $500,000 immediately before retirement had spent down only 11.8 percent
within the first 20 years of retirement at the median.

Love Connection: How Single Status Affects 401(k) Savers
One is not just the loneliest number-it's apparently also the least confident when it comes to financial
security.
Single retirees are more worried about being able to afford the retirement lifestyle they desire than
their married counterparts, new research shows. They're concerned about outliving 401(k) or other
retirement savings, too.
According to LIMRA Secure Retirement Institute (LIMRA SRI), just 64 percent of single retirees are confident
in their ability to maintain a favorable lifestyle during retirement. But 71 percent of retirees who
are married or have a partner report feeling confident.
When asked about their financial outlook should they live to be 90, 40 percent of single retirees fear
their savings will fall short. Single women think they're in even more trouble: almost half believe they
will run out of money before turning 90.

Truce: 401(k) Advisors Make Active/Passive Peace
It's a thaw in relations not seen since the Soviets.
More than 80 percent of financial advisors agree that passive investments help minimize overall
portfolio fees and that active managers are ideal for certain asset classes, Cerulli Associates finds.
Doing its part to increase the peace, the global research and consulting firm notes, " Approximately 75
percent of advisors agree that active and passive investments complement each other. "
" Cerulli argues that the debate of active or passive has shifted to active and passive, with more focus
on how to best use both as tools to build more efficient client portfolios, " Brendan Powers, Cerulli
analyst, said in a statement.
" Through Cerulli's conversations with industry executives, there is a feeling that active and passive
will ultimately coexist and assets within each strategy type will eventually reach an equilibrium, " Powers
added. " In other words, it's not a zero-sum game, and instead each will be used where they provide
the most benefit. "
