...But Younger 401(k) Participants Really
Like Them
EMPLOYERS MIGHT BE growing more skeptical, but not so with
participants. Target date fund investing continues to be prevalent in
401(k) plans, particularly among younger participants, according to
an updated joint study from the Investment Company Institute (ICI)
and the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).
The study, " 401(k) Plan Asset Allocation, Account Balances, and
Loan Activity in 2019, " found that among participants in their twenties,
54.1% of their 401(k) assets were invested in target date funds
at year-end 2019, compared with 28.8% among participants in their
sixties. At year-end 2019, 31.3% of 401(k) assets in the database
overall were invested in target date funds, up from 26.6% at yearend
2018.
Recently hired 401(k) plan participants were more likely to be
invested in target date funds at year-end 2019. Among those with
two or fewer years of tenure, 65% held target date funds, compared
with 57% of participants with more than 10 to 20 years of tenure,
and 43% of participants with more than 30 years of tenure.
Overall, 60% of 401(k) plan participants had target date
fund investments at year-end 2019.

Retirement for
Single Seniors
Financially Harder
SINGLE SENIORS ARE having a much harder time affording retirement
than their married counterparts, according to recent research
from American Advisors Group.
While inflation and the current economic climate have put a
financial strain on many older Americans, the new data shows that
unmarried seniors are clearly the most affected.
For example, the survey found retirement plans have been less
successful for single seniors. 36% of single seniors (and 41% of
single senior women) said their retirement did not work out as
planned, while only 23% of married couples answered the same.
Traditional retirement strategies have worked less often for
single seniors. The data show 30% of single seniors (and 34% of
single senior women) feel the financial advice they were given did
not work out for them, while only 20% of married couples answered
the same.
