As organizations continue to seek the activation of their collective potential through transformation
and growth, they continue to look to their leaders for strategic guidance. Yet as reported by Deloitte,
there is " a large leadership gap causing disconnect " ; many leaders are " overwhelmed and
struggling to identify what they should prioritize in this 'new normal.' " 1
Being a leader can be one of the toughest and most rewarding roles that a person can
experience. Leaders help create value for clients or customers; they impact employee
engagement, motivation, and thriving; they drive action and adoption of new processes,
skills, or structures necessary for growth; they lead teams and organizations to success
through strategy activation; and so much more. They are trusted to lead others, and
they are tasked with expectations of how to do that effectively. Taking an empathetic
view of Deloitte's findings, all these factors impact what's needed of leaders in any
given moment-it's hard for any leader to intuitively know all the time how they
can be most effective.
At TiER1, we believe the role of a leader extends beyond simply holding a position
of authority. In the broadest sense, a leader is someone who guides, influences, and
directs individuals or groups toward a common goal or vision. Doing this requires
leaders to continually balance many complex factors-from inside the organization,
including interpersonal dynamics and intrapersonal development, as well as external
factors in the world.
We also aspire to be a platform for developing leaders. Because our life's work is to
develop great leaders, we aim to equip leaders with the tools, practices, and systems to
support their development, drawing upon lessons learned and our experiences working
with consultants and clients to frame up what's possible for new and emerging leaders.
In this magazine, we collected relevant client stories and insights that have guided our work
to develop and empower leaders, both at TiER1 and the many organizations we serve. We hope
it will support you and your team's exploration of the opportunities and challenges of modern
