Performance Matters - Learning and Performance - 12
INCOMING
We asked leaders and peers in the field to share their favorite learning
& performance innovators. Here's what some of them had to say.
TRANSMISSIONS
From Patrick Bowl, Director of Learning and Development at Worldpay:
My favorite L&D leader is Elaine Biech. If you've been to an ATD Conference, chances
are you've seen Elaine speak or at least heard her name. She's been doing this for a
long time, contributing to the L&D community even before it was cool. (I'm just kidding
because there was never a time when it wasn't cool.) A few years back when I decided
to make a career change, I wanted to get into this industry, so I picked up a couple of
books, and one of them was authored by Elaine. I thought out of the blue I'm just going
to email her and ask her if she has any advice for someone who wants to switch
careers. I didn't expect a response because she doesn't know me, but I got one, and if
I had printed it out, it probably would have been about four pages long. She really took
the time to lay out exactly what I should do, and I so appreciated that. Over the years,
I've seen how much Elaine gives back of herself; she's not just about the work but
[goes] above and beyond in how she can contribute to other people, their careers, and
the industry overall... I so appreciate that Elaine gives back like that. So thank you,
Elaine, for the influence you've had on my career, and thank you for everything you've
done for L&D overall.
From Toby Sharpe,
PMP, CCP, MBA, P.Eng,
Program Manager of Learning
and Development
at Workplace Safety and
Insurance Board (WSIB) Ontario:
Sharon Boller, hearing Patrick Bowl's nomination was not much
different than our first interaction. I bought your book Design Thinking
for Training and Development and reached out to you. I was so
humbled to have you accept my request and invitation to speak with
our staff in providing guidance. Thank you, Sharon Boller!
From Julia Huprich, PhD, VP
of Learning Science at Intellum:
From Ruth Colvin-Clark,
Owner of Clark Training & Consulting:
Mirjam Neelen. Her writings on evidenceinformed
learning design really changed the
way I approach my own work and helped
to cement my interest in incorporating the
learning sciences into customer education.
I am grateful to the researchers, especially Richard Mayer, who
have worked for many years to provide us all with instructionally
relevant evidence.
