ENTERPRISE LEARNING ECOSYSTEM
(
NAVIGATING LXP
by Steve Owens
Employees are changing roles, changing processes,
and reskilling more quickly and fluidly than ever before.
To meet these needs, many leaders are adding a new
class of learning technology platforms to their
enterprise learning ecosystem. The Learning
Experience Platform (LXP) and related technologies
hold the promise of more engaging, employee-directed,
collaborative learning-often right in the flow of
work-which drives not only employee development,
but also adds measurable value to the business. A
people-centered approach to LXP selection, design,
deployment, and adoption will enable you and your
people to fulfill that promise.
What is an LXP? In the world of learning &
performance, the term " LXP " is most used as an
abbreviation for Learning Experience Platforms. The
definition of " Learning Experience Platform " continues
to shift, but in general, it refers to a new class of
platforms that put the learner at the center of the
learning experience (rather than the content).
These new platforms provide features and capabilities
that keep employees across the enterprise engaged
with content, programs, peers, and experts " in the flow
of work. " They also harness powerful technologies, like
artificial intelligence and machine learning, to drive
relevant and personalized learning based on individual
profiles and criteria defined by organization.
With many innovative learning platforms available on
the market for a variety of use cases, it can be
challenging to decide which platform type will serve
your company best. Although a single platform may not
meet all learner needs, it's important to understand
how different platforms can improve a company's
learning ecosystem and overall productivity. We break
down several platform types, including LXPs, and offer
considerations for selection.
LEARNING
EXPERIENCE
PLATFORMS
) & THE
LEARNING MANAGEMENT
SYSTEMS (LMS)
are probably the platform most familiar
to organizations. They are traditional
administrative-driven digital training
platforms designed to house, deliver,
and track a company's training content.
An administrator oversees the content
that is served up to end users through
the LMS user interface. Users' learning
experiences are curated by the
administrator managing the LMS.
These platforms are essential in
compliance-focused organizations that
have complex assignment logic and
reporting requirements. They are sometimes
standalone, but often bundled as part of
an organization's broader Human Capital
Management (HCM) platform. Companies
that rely on their LMS for compliance are
not replacing their systems, but are
choosing to add new platforms to their
learning ecosystem to close gaps.
