Ribbon Pairs
Steve Landen and Pratap Rajadhyaksha,
one of North America's strongest
partnerships, came from behind in the
second final session to win the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs by less than
half a board. Their margin of victory
over runners-up Ernesto Muzzio and
Alejandro Bianchedi of Argentina
was 20.16 matchpoints on a top of 51.
After the first final session, the
winners were in eighth place, but
they fashioned a 59.31% game in
the evening session to come out on
top. The victory made up for their
second-place finish in the event in
2001, when Rajadhyaksha revoked
in the final round, costing eight
matchpoints and dropping them
from a win to second place, five
matchpoints out of first. The opponents, Rajadhyaksha said, were not
aware of the revoke, which he called
to their attention.
Landen is a stay-at-home dad,
minding son Matthew, 12, and
daughter Samantha, 14 - but he also
has been "playing a lot of bridge."
Rajadhyaksha is retired from an
engineering business and does some
part-time consulting work while also
playing a lot of bridge.
The two were on the winning squad
in the Reisinger Board-a-Match
Teams in 2002 and represented the
16

U.S. in the Bermuda Bowl in Monte
Carlo the following year. The team
earned the bronze medal in that tournament. They also won the national
Open Pairs in 2000.
They have been partners for more
than 26 years and, said Landen,
"We're still good friends."
