Yang credits the success of this deal
to Shi's 4 bid, setting diamonds as
trumps and expressing slam interest.
On the opening lead of a low club,
Yang won dummy's ace, cashed the
A and  K and ruffed a heart
(East discarding). Declarer reentered
dummy with the J and ruffed another heart. Yang drew trumps and led
a spade toward dummy's king. The
defense could not prevent declarer
from getting to the dummy to discard
his losing spades on the established
hearts.

After passing originally, South
overcalled 1 with his rather meager
values, undeterred by the unfavorable vulnerability. Shi rebid 1,
and North raised hearts. Yang, who
had enough values to force to game,
but lacked clear direction, doubled
to get more information from West.
Shi, however, had no good options
and decided to convert the double to
penalty.
The defense scored seven obvious tricks to defeat the contract two
tricks. That was plus 500. Note that
even if the vulnerability had been
equal, the decision to convert the
double would have still been correct
since East-West can't make 3NT
despite holding a combined 26 highcard points.
