Although it's not the norm, declarer
should occasionally ruff in the hand
that contains the greater trump
length.

Today's your lucky day. Not only
do you get to see all 52 cards, but
you also have the suggestion shown
above. Can you make 4 after West
leads the J?
In general, you don't want to
shorten the hand (usually declarer's)
that has the trump length. It rarely
gains extra tricks, and you frequently
50

need to save your trumps to deal with
the opponents' trumps.
You have three heart losers, so you
can't afford to lose your fourth club.
A 3-3 club split is against the odds,
so instead of winning a fourth club
trick, you should set your sights on
winning six trump tricks.
Win the opening lead with
dummy's A, and ruff the 2 with
your 9. Cash the A and lead the
2 to dummy's 10. When both opponents follow, ruff another diamond
with the J.
Cross back to dummy with the
A, and ruff dummy's last diamond
with your K. Reenter dummy with
the K, and draw West's last trump
with the Q as you discard a heart.
The Q provides your 10th trick.
In fact, if clubs had divided 3-3, your
last club would have been good, and
you would lose only two hearts and
make five!
By ruffing three diamonds in your
hand while still being able to draw
three rounds of trumps, you were
able to create a sixth trump trick. The
procedure you've executed is called
a dummy reversal. Note that when
you played a second round of spades,
if they split 4-1, you would abandon
the dummy reversal, draw trumps,
and then play for clubs to split 3-3.
The expected 6-0 split

A revealing auction! You had an
excellent two-suited hand until West
showed a long, strong club suit with
his weak jump-overcall. Once you
knew that clubs were stacked in
West's hand, you forgot about slam
and settled for 4. Of course, if
you had known about North's two
major-suit aces, you would have bid
3NT and enjoyed your nine tricks off
the top.
In 4, you have exactly eight
tricks outside of clubs: two spades,
one diamond and five hearts.
Therefore, you need to win tricks
with two of your five clubs.
Because West is marked with six
clubs, East must be void. To win two
club tricks, you need to make sure
your A does not get ruffed, and you
need to ruff a club in dummy without
being overruffed. Obviously, you'll
ruff with dummy's A, so you must
save that card.
You win the opening J lead, and
unblock the K at trick two. Now
what?
One way to make 10 tricks is to
lead a low club! West will win his
8. Many variations are possible at
this point, but no matter what West
leads, you are in control. Suppose
West shifts to a trump. Win the 9
and duck a second club. West will
win and lead another trump.
Ruff the 7 with dummy's A.
Cash the A, and discard one of
your losers. Ruff a spade to your
hand, and draw East's remaining
trump. You're finally ready to cash
the A. Your last trump is your
10th trick.
