Foundation
Election Notice
ACBL members interested in running for the Board
of Trustees of the ACBL Educational Foundation
are welcome to submit a written declaration of
candidacy. Deadline for submission is Nov. 3, 2008.

Two members of the Educational Foundation's ninemember board will be elected from the membership
at large by the ACBL Board of Directors for a threeyear term. Trustees do not receive reimbursement
for expenses. The election will occur at the fall Board
of Directors meeting in Boston.
Those wishing to become a candidate for the
Educational Foundation's Board of Trustees are
encouraged to send a written declaration of candidacy
containing your name, address, player number and

Hugh MacLean
1938 - 2001
Hugh MacLean of Gonzales TX died
April 17 in his sleep from a probable
heart attack. He was 70.
A Grand Life Master, MacLean won
the Life Master Pairs in 1970, the Men's
Teams in 1974 and placed second in
the Vanderbilt KO Teams in 1977 and in
the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1975. Much of his success came
when playing with Ron Andersen. In international play, he
was sixth in the World Open Pairs in 1978. He was a WBF
International Master.
MacLean was a fixture in Minnesota bridge for most of
his life. He was a full-time player, a bridge club owner and
the District 14 tournament coordinator. He moved to Texas
in 1997 for family reasons.
MacLean has been described as a colorful and largerthan-life character. Bridge player Ron DeHarpporte, who
knew MacLean from age 17, remembers him:
"Hugh always said that he thought he could win enough
money to support himself without working. I believe that he
is the only person I know who lived his entire life without
ever getting a Social Security card.
"Hugh was absolutely one of the funniest people I have
ever known. His humor was often at the expense of someone else, including me, but it was very hard to keep from
laughing when you were around him. He had a truly brilliant mind, and he led the life he wanted. I am sad that he
is gone."
He is survived by his wife Mary Anne.

susan L. Torrey
1939 - 2008
Susan Torrey, 69, one of the North
Carolina's best-known players, died
April 3 in Chapel Hill after a threeyear fight with cancer. Her husband,
John, wrote that "Sue's trademark was
her aggressive, intuitive style of play,
which brought her high placing in four
national events, first or second rankings in more than 20 regional championships, and many, many sectional titles."
An active player from the Sixties, Torrey's first regional
win came in 1988, and she won 4500 of her 6542 points
after 1990.
Torrey worked for bridge at every level. She was chairman of countless sectionals, president of the Bright Leaf
Unit, served on the ACBL and Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference boards of governors and was Grand National Teams
coordinator for District 7 for seven years.
She brought many players to the game through teaching, and her Friday afternoon club game has been an area
fixture for more than 15 years. Shortly before her death,
she was appointed to the ACBL Goodwill Committee from
District 7.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children
and 15 grandchildren.
