had an easy nine tricks, losing only
one trick in each suit. Plus 140 again,

The second half of the match,
however, was all Milner. They won
the third set 43-12 and the last set by
September 2008
a whopping 61-5. This deal (rotated)
was a 13-IMP swing to the winners:

Easts pitched a low club.
In the Open Room, Ekeblad won in
hand and ducked a round of spades.
West, Morse, won the 10 and
cleared diamonds. Wolff had to guess
what to discard, however, and he let
go of two more clubs, allowing Ekeblad to score one spade, one heart,
two diamonds and five clubs: nine
tricks for plus 600.
In the Closed Room, Onstott won
the A on the opening lead and
played a heart to the 9 and East's
jack. Lev, East, tried the K, which
declarer ducked. The Q was next,
also ducked. When Lev exited with
the 2, Onstott guessed wrong and
rose with the ace. When declarer
went after a second diamond trick,
however, West, Eisenberg, ducked,
and East safely discarded a heart.
When both opponents followed low
to the A, declarer couldn't be sure
if West was 2=2=7=2 or 2=3=7=1.
Onstott decided it was the former and
played clubs from the top. When the
suit didn't behave, the defense was
able to collect a club, a heart and a
spade on the end for down two.
Milner won the match 143-73. r
Four for four
Earlier this year, playing at the
Cleveland Regional, four Ohioans
playing as a team in the knockouts became Life Masters at the
same time. They are Retha Lakins
