Janos Racz

The New York bridge scene has lost
one of its most colorful personalities
when Janos Racz died at the age of 66
in the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Hospital on April 4, having battled cancer
for a year.
He traveled to Las Vegas last summer
for the NABC, weakened and bald, after
an intensive course of chemotherapy,
which was considered successful. In the
following months, he regained some of
his strength and all of his magnificent
hair, but his blood count was consistently low.
Eventually, it was determined that he
developed a particularly virulent form of
myeloma, but by the time treatment was
begun, it was too late.
Throughout his illness, Janos, a highly
volatile man - often appearing to be on
the verge of panic at times because of
personal or business mishaps - maintained incredible serenity and courage.
I met Janos soon after both of us immigrated into United States. I arrived in
an orderly, albeit traumatic, fashion, having left Poland on the wave of a Jewish
exodus in 1968. Janos traveled to Yugoslavia with the Hungarian Junior National
Bridge Team, then walked through the
border to Italy and applied for an American refugee visa.
Janos and his older brother survived
the Holocaust when a Catholic nanny
took them literally off the train going to
Auschwitz. Their parents perished.
A brilliant, enterprising and gutsy
individual, Janos quickly established
himself in New York, earning decent
money in some kind of delivery job, later
graduating from the Columbia School of
Business, eventually becoming an option
trader on the American Stock Exchange,
like many other bridge players.
Part of Janos' life centered on his family - his wife, Joyce and two daughters,
Marianna and Becksy, and the Jewish
community on the West Side, where he
lived for many years.
Most of his social interactions, however, took place in the world of bridge.
In New York, he was a fixture in Al
Roth's Mayfair Club. Later he was playing IMPs in the famous Beverly Bridge
Club's nightly games.
Janos and I played in countless sectionals, regionals and NABCs with moderate success. We were never a very
strong partnership, constantly arguing
at the table. We usually played in pairs
games, now less and less popular.
