is on his left. If he guesses to play the
king, he may then draw trumps, cash
the A K (pitching a diamond from
dummy) and ruff a heart, dropping
East's Q-J. The established 10 will
allow another diamond pitch from
dummy, and declarer will lose only a
club trick to make the slam. Had this
happened, Martel's team would have
lost the match.

Ramos are the GNT Flight A
champions.

The team captained by Chien Yao
Tseng, representing District 23,
jumped out to an early lead in the
Grand National Teams Flight A and
cruised to a 129-75 victory over
the District 19 squad led by Dave
Grubbs.
The winners are John Ramos and
David Kempe of Los Angeles and
Matt Klimesh and Tseng of Pasadena
CA.
The runners-up are Grubbs, of
Seattle WA, Kevin Bolan, Snohomish
WA, John Maki of Bothell WA, and
Bill O'Brien of Mountlake Terrace WA.
Ramos, an independent film producer, won his second GNT Flight A.
Last year, he was added to a District
24 (New York) squad and came in

first at the Summer NABC in Las
Vegas. He was added this year, as
well. Klimesh is an engineer. Kempe
is a professor of computer science at
the University of Southern California.
Tseng is a graduate student in physics
at Cal Tech.
They took a 44-34 lead after the
first quarter and expanded it to 24
IMPs by halftime. They led 79-56
with a quarter to go and pulled away
in the fourth quarter, winning that set
50-19.
