Bridge players reach out
Unit 112 duplicate bridge players
turned out in large numbers for the
Rainbow Charity Sectional Tournament in Waterloo NY. The Unit,
located across the central part of
the state, donated $2131 to the Food
Bank of Central New York from the
proceeds.
Tom Slater, Executive Director
of the FBCNY, acknowledged the
donation by saying, "This generous
donation was a wonderful surprise to
us here at the Food Bank. It will help
us meet the increased demand for so
many people in need."
Tournament Co-chairs were Mary
Miller of Canandaigua NY and Margie
Spence of Fairport NY. Miller says,
"It was so energizing to organize an
event that was warmly embraced by
so many bridge players. We were especially pleased that so many non-life

master players wanted to be a part of
this."
Margie Spence added, "This event
was very positive for the Bridge
community. Many bridge players commented that they weren't playing well,
but were having a great time anyway.
Giving brings out the best in people."
The decision to have this charity
event was made by the Unit 112
Board of Directors in 2009.

Bridge is a language
of its own

College students from around the
world sampled bridge recently at the
Columbia (SC) Bridge Club.
CBC member Leigh Hursh is involved in an English as a Second
Language program at the University
of South Carolina. She visited one of
the classes and asked if any played
bridge, thinking that would be a game
requiring less elaborate English.
Not one of the students had heard
of bridge. The ESL instructor asked
Hursh to demonstrate bridge at the
next meeting.
Before the next meeting, the instructor held a crash course in bridge.
She taught the students basic elements such as suits and tricks. Hursh

enlisted three CBC club players, Judy
Sellers, Jerry Love and Marcia Fletcher, to teach and do a demonstration
in a side room next to the CBC regular game. The students played two
boards, then received handouts with
introductory bridge information and
hand records for the two deals they
played.
CBC director Mary Townhill allowed the students to come into the
main room and watch the play. The
students circled about and were delighted to receive a round of applause
from these players with thousands of
masterpoints.
The teaching CBC members then
demonstrated bridge deals. In return,
the students provided snacks - some
special to their countries, such as
Arabian coffee (Saudi Arabia), pistachio nuts (Iran) and noodles and lamb
(Taiwan).
The finale was amazing. The students played boards with the CBC
members. It was heartwarming to see
the interest of these young people
and the hospitality of the Columbia
Bridge Club.
The students ranged in age from
17 to 28 and came from Kuwait, Iran,
Venezuela, China, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Chile.

We made it happen

The Bridge Club of Lexington (KY)
recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of our newly expanded and
totally renovated bridge facility. We
needed to increase the size of our
clubhouse due to the 83% growth we
experienced during the past eight
years - we were simply bursting at
the seams. Our lease was about to expire, so we took this as our chance to
move to something better.
Transforming our vision into reality
was not easy. We began by communicating our intent to the membership
in 2007. We solicited input from players who wanted to contribute ideas
for the new facility. Many of their suggestions were adopted.
