After a lengthy pause in the auction
at his third turn, Wooldridge propelled
himself into 4.
He ruffed the diamond opening lead,
led a club to the king (which held) then
played three rounds of spades, ruffed
with the 7 and overruffed. Now came
a club from dummy. East won and
shifted to a heart. Wooldridge rose with
the A, ruffed a spade to dummy and
ruffed a diamond to hand. Now he led
his fifth spade to pitch dummy's remain‑
ing diamond, limiting the defenders to
just three tricks total.
