Topics in Defense:
Counting again
This series has briefly treated
several aspects of defensive play.
It's appropriate to end, as we began,
with counting since consistently tight
defense without it is impossible.
Defenders have much to consider;
they must make crucial decisions on
a trick-by-trick basis. Yet building a
picture of declarer's hand based on
the bidding and early play - counting
high-card points, distribution and winners - will often be the key.

wins the second trump and tries to
cash the Q. South ruffs, draws the
last trump, and leads the A and
another diamond.
When West takes the king, he can
count nine tricks for South: four
trumps, four diamonds and a heart. So
West need not lay down the A; he
should exit with his last diamond. Af-
ter South runs the diamonds, he will
still have two clubs, and the defense
will prevail if East has the Q-10.

points. West leads the 5. South
plays dummy's jack, winning, and lets
the 10 ride to West's king.
West can place declarer with
the A and the A J because he
wouldn't pass the 10 with a weaker
club holding. If declarer also has the
A (and if he doesn't, his first play
might have been a diamond), his
hearts can be no better than Q-x-x.
If instead East has the A, declarer's
hearts can be no better than K-Q-x.
East should shift to the 2. On the
actual deal, that shift is necessary to
beat the contract.

West wants to find his partner's entry. If West shifts to the J and South
has the ace, South will have at least
eight tricks. Could a club shift cost? If
South has the A Q, he will still have
only seven tricks - four spades, two
clubs and a heart - and the contract
will fail if East has the A. West
should shift to the 8.
A club shift might lose if South had
the 10 as well as the ace-queen.
Then the run of the spades would
strip-squeeze West.
