Susan "Susie" Clayman 1945-2014
District 7 lost one of its most vital and
visible volunteers when Susie Clayman of
Valdese NC died from a brain aneurism
on June 29. She was 68.
Eldon Clayman, her husband and partner,
held many important jobs in bridge governance through the past 20 years, but Susie
was the person who really made things
happen around the bridge tables, from
the 13 or 14 in their basement club game to the four annual
Morganton sectionals that for many years drew more than 1300
tables. She was a member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee
and Charity Committee for more than a decade. She also had
the time and skill to become a Diamond Life Master with more
than 5400 masterpoints.
Susie was the ultimate "people person," a Pied Piper of the
grassroots players she personally made welcome at any venue.
With a knack for recognizing when a frustrated player may
need encouragement, Susie seemed to pop up to provide it.
Her smile was a constant.
Susie's cooking and baking quickly became synonymous
with the Claymans' sectionals, and there is no question that
helped draw such sizeable crowds to a small town.
Appropriately, the memorial service and celebration of Susie's life on July 4 attracted more people than places to sit.
Hosts at the Valdese funeral home had to scramble to set up
about 15 extra chairs. No doubt Susie wanted to prove she still
could draw a crowd.

Ace Greenberg 1927-2014
Alan Courtney "Ace" Greenberg died
July 25 in Manhattan NY. He was 86. Greenberg was best known as chairman and CEO
of Bear Stearns, a global financial services
firm, but pursued many other interests, including championship bridge.
A Silver Life Master, Greenberg won the
Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams in 1977
and was second in 1981. Greenberg won the
Maccabiah Games teams bridge tournament in 1981, which is part of the quadrennial Jewish Olympics.
Eddie Kantar said, "Our team winning in the Maccabiah Games
I know made him both proud and thrilled. It was definitely one of
the highlights of his bridge career.
"When I saw him at various NABCs, he was always smiling
and easy to talk to. He loved to play bridge and loved to amuse
bridge players with his magic tricks that always brought oohs and
aahs from the encircling crowd. In short, he was someone I was
glad to consider a friend."
After earning a B.A. in business in 1949 from the University of
Missouri, Greenberg joined Bear Stearns as a clerk. He quickly
learned the arbitrage trading business and, by age 25, was running

the department. Six years later, Greenberg became a full partner
at the firm. In 1969, he hired fellow bridge expert and future Bear
Stearns chairman and CEO Jimmy Cayne as a stockbroker.
Greenberg was the CEO of Bear Stearns from 1978 to 1993.
Starting with 1000 employees and $46 million in equity, he built
the firm up to 6300 employees and $1.8 billion. The company
went public in 1985, and Greenberg was the chairman of the
board until 2001.
Thereafter, he was the chairman of the executive committee
until the firm, on the verge of financial collapse, sold to JPMorgan Chase in 2008. Greenberg then served as a vice chairman
emeritus.
Greenberg played bridge regularly at the Regency Whist Club
in Manhattan with Cayne, Laurence Tisch (co-founder of Loews
Corporation) and Milton Petrie (founder of Petrie Stores). According to an article in Fortune, "Warren Buffett and Malcolm
Forbes occasionally played on the same team as those four, and together they called themselves Corporate America's Six Honchos,
or 'CASH' for short."
Greenberg is survived by his second wife, Kathryn; two children from his first marriage, Ted and Lynne Koeppel; a brother,
Maynard; a sister, DiAnne Hirsch, and five grandchildren.
