In Washington DC, District 3 Director Glenda Calkins tendered her resignation
from the ACBL Board of Directors for health reasons. We used the occasion to
celebrate her and her quarter century of service to our game.
One of the words most used to describe Glenda is
quiet; another is wise. Debbie Wasik, president of
District 3, describes the rare gifts that make Glenda
such an invaluable asset: "Glenda won't be pushed
into forming an immediate opinion. She takes everything in. She thinks about things and gets all the facts
before she forms an opinion."
Debbie says of her mentor, "Glenda is tenacious.
She's probably the most tenacious person I have ever
met."
According to Glenda's husband, Barkley, Glenda
is always saying, "We really need to give back to the
game we love so much."
Glenda started her administrative career as a
member of the Unit 106 (North Jersey) board, then as unit president for three
years. She also served as president of District 3 (Eastern NY, New Jersey). She
has held a variety of offices, including District 3's roving tournament chair and
head of tournament coordination for Districts 3, 24 and 25.
Glenda looked to longtime District 3 rep Joan Gerard as her mentor. When
Joan became ill, Joan campaigned hard for Glenda to take her place on the board.
After Joan's passing, Glenda assumed her friend's board seat and was subsequently re-elected for a three-year term beginning in January 2015.
Like her mentor, Glenda's passion is youth bridge, and she has been a strong
pro-youth voice at the board level. She helped establish the New Jersey/New
York Youth Bridge Association, a 501(c)(3) group to support bridge for young
people in District 3.
"The decision to step down from the national board was extremely difficult for
Glenda," Barkley says. "She says it's the most difficult thing she's ever had to do."
Celebrating Glenda reminds me yet again how dependent the ACBL is on
volunteers. And how vital it is that we tell our volunteers over and over again how
grateful we are for their time and dedication.
On behalf of all of ACBL's members, thank you, Glenda. You are appreciated.
More volunteer power: Congratulations to everyone who made The Longest
Day 2016 an overwhelming success. The final numbers aren't in, but it looks like
ACBL's contributions to the Alzheimer's Association and Canada's Alzheimer
Society are going to top half a million dollars for the fourth year running. In addition
to raising public awareness of bridge, The
Longest Day is an opportunity for us, as good
neighbors, to give back to our communities.
