Myron Alan "Mike" Fine 1928-2017

Mike Fine, one of the best bridge players in the Richmond VA area and a shining
light for the Richmond Bridge Association
(Unit 109), passed away Jan. 21 at the age
of 88.
Seeing the need to get more players
involved, Mike organized the teaching of
Easybridge! classes, which became Friendly Bridge, a terrifically successful program
for beginning and intermediate players. During the '80s, he
served as president of the Richmond Bridge Association (RBA)
for nine years and successfully guided the unit through difficult
financial times.
Born in Brooklyn NY, Mike and his brother, Gerry, moved to
Richmond in the '50s and ran Fine Brothers Supermarket. In the
early '70s, he started a new venture, Fine Windshield Repair,
that he owned for 42 years before retiring in 2016.
Over the years, he found time to play in regional and local
bridge tournaments, earning the distinction of Diamond Life
Master, and earned more than 7100 points. Only five active
players have accumulated more points in the Richmond area.
Mike was always eager to help up-and-coming players with
tips and suggestions on bridge. He and his partner of more than
45 years, Richmond (Dickie) Hamilton, were recognized at the
October 2016 RBA Sectional on Dickie's 95th birthday. They
promptly recorded a 62% game. Mike will be missed at The
Bridge Center in Richmond, by the RBA and the entire bridge
community, which has suffered a tremendous loss.

Barbara Piltch 1947-2017
Barbara Piltch of South Bend IN died Jan. 17. She was 70.
A Life Master, Piltch served in many capacities for Unit 108
(Eastern Massachusetts). She co-chaired the 1999 Fall NABC
in Boston and was the secretary and a board member for the
unit for several years. Piltch also served as the hospitality chairperson for the Eastern Massachusetts Bridge Association.
An advocate of new player education, Piltch was an ACBL
accredited teacher and was instrumental in greatly increasing
attendance at Unit 108 newcomer and pro-am games during
her tenure.
From the District 8 Advocate: "A talented seamstress, Barbara donated many items to the Christ Child Society in South
Bend. She was very involved with animal rescue activities, and
she served as president of the Pekinese Rescue Society in New
England. Barbara led a campaign at South Bend Bridge Club to
send gifts to service people in Iraq. Barbara was active at Sinai
Synagogue in South Bend, in study groups, and in hospitality."
Barbara is survived by husband Howard Piltch, to whom she
was married 38 years, and son Joseph. She was preceded in
death by son Robert.
