Larry Kolker 1928-2018
Larry Kolker, a member of the winning
squad in the 1962 Vanderbilt Knockout
Teams, died May 1. Kolker, an Emerald Life
Master and lifelong resident of St. Louis
MO, was 90.
For several decades, Kolker and the late
Jake Samuels operated the Dorchester
Bridge Club. Patrons could play rubber
bridge (actually four-deal Chicago style)
for varying stakes.
Larry was the last living member of a five-player team which
entered the 1962 Vanderbilt Cup event in Lexington KY. In a
double elimination format, the "Cinderella" St. Louis team tied
the Goren team and the Stayman team. In an enthralling threeteam final, St. Louis vanquished their famous opponents.
ACBL Hall of Famer Mark Lair said, "In the 1977 Spingold
semifinals, our five-man team - based in St. Louis - was anchored by Larry and Charlie Wiley. We fell short by 4 IMPs to
the eventual winners.
"For decades, Larry and Jake ran the Dorchester, one of the
very best rubber bridge clubs in the country. Larry was the proprietor. They were a great team dealing with various problems
that arose. Jake most always was the good cop of their partnership, while Larry possessed a cool wit, and he was never to be
taken advantage of. Through bridge, Larry and I became special lifelong friends, checking in with each other several times
each year until very shortly before his death. I will surely miss
my dear friend."
Larry is survived by his wife Silke and two daughters, Leslie
Lane and Tracy Kissing. A son, John, predeceased him.
